Steven Skinner Artist's Statement

Steven Skinner Stoneware and Porcelain Pottery - bio

I combine hand building and wheel throwing techniques using stoneware and porcelain clays with high fire and low fire glazes and colored slips to make functional and sculpted pottery. Traditional shapes from ancient cultures, and found in archeological sites or museum collections, inform my work. I’m influenced by ideas found in art movements such as Dada, American Regionalism, and Pop as well as shapes and forms from Pre-Columbian Peruvian and Etruscan cultures.

Much of my experience making art is founded upon and firmly grounded in spontaneity and expressiveness of thought and gesture during the art making process. Clay for me is the perfect medium to work spontaneously with expressive thought and execution and is especially well suited for the exploration of creative accidents and gesture in elements of sculpted form and texture and color.
